Work Groups

Groups from across the country serve alongside us & strengthen the San Luis Valley

Help Us Make an Impact

Work groups come from all over the country to help La Puente complete projects, serve our clients, and impact the community.

These can be mission or service groups, consisting of 4-15 people, coming from churches, youth groups, schools, or a gathering of friends. Their unique skills and experience allow us to get creative, whether through serving clients directly or through the crucial work of maintaining or improving our service sites.

Workgroups volunteer for a designated period of time, with opportunities for learning more about our mission and the clients we serve. Groups can stay anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week. All volunteers are encouraged to learn more about La Puente in order to understand which program their skills fit best.

Work Group Testimonials

"Our son volunteered at La Puente with his middle school years ago and was deeply affected. In the years since, he has been a recreation counselor for people with disabilities and an AmeriCorps volunteer supporting aspiring first-generation college students, among other things. His path brings to mind La Puente’s values and strategies, as well as its diverse ways of working in our world."

Beret E. Strong
Parent of Past Volunteer

"This past spring, I was chaperoning a group of high school students doing service at La Puente. It was our first time doing a service trip in the San Luis Valley. While serving lunch at the shelter and watching people eat together in the dining room, I couldn't tell who was a client, who was a staff member, or who was a volunteer. I was struck by the beauty of that."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need Work Groups?

Work Groups often vary in size, ages, and type of organization.  Some groups have specific skills where they handle a specific need, some have limited skills but a desire to learn about what it means to serve.  No matter the skill level, what work groups bring are their hearts of service and willingness to embrace the people they serve!  In accomplishing projects, they also touch people’s live with care and compassion.  Each individual brings their skills and personalities with them, but as a group they become a unique entity to transform lives, both of the people they serve and the people they serve with.

How do Work Groups meet needs?

Work groups engage in a variety of projects (i.e., cooking meals at our shelter, sorting through donations at our Rainbow’s End Thrift Stores, gardening with VEGI, etc.). There are individual neighbors in our community who, while needing their yard raked or house painted, also need a listening ear as much as a helping hand.  Work groups are able to take on projects with the resources to accomplish them, the opportunity to make someone’s life better, and learn about providing dignity for all whom they serve and all whom they serve with.  The hope is that they take the experiences they learn at La Puente and translate it back to their everyday lives.
